Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been practiced for over 3,000 years in China. Acupuncture uses the gentle insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body. This process stimulates the flow of Qi (energy; pronounced “chee”) within the body, allowing the natural healing process to take place.

Acupuncture helps to prevent illness by improving the overall health functioning of the body’s immune system and organ systems. Acupuncture is helpful for treating existing illnesses and injuries, preventing both recurrence of illnesses and new illnesses and improving overall health.

How does acupuncture work?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine health is viewed through energy that flows in acupuncture channels (or meridians) throughout the body and over the surfaces. The meridians are like rivers carrying energy to nourish our body. When the body’s energy is balanced, Qi flows smoothly through the meridians to nourish the organs and tissues. If there is a blockage in the meridians, Qi cannot flow smoothly, the body’s innate balance is disrupted and illness results.

Acupuncture points are specific points along the meridian (located all over the body) where Qi is concentrated. The insertion of the acupuncture needles at specific acupuncture points engages the Qi and helps the body to regain its natural balance.

Does it hurt?
Everyone experiences acupuncture differently. If any sensation is felt during the insertion of the needle it usually feels like a mosquito bite, which disappears quickly. Once the needles are inserted people experience warming, achy, heavy, numb, or tingling sensations, which are good signs. Most people find the treatment very relaxing and some even fall asleep.

How many treatments will I need?
The number and frequency of treatments required vary for every person depending on the condition, the severity of the condition, and the person’s Qi. Some people experience immediate relief while others may take months or even years to achieve results. Acupuncturists may recommend one or two treatments a week or monthly visits.

Your first appointment
Your acupuncturist will ask you several questions regarding your condition and overall health. Chinese medicine recognizes subtle changes in symptoms, so be as descriptive as possible. Your acupuncturist will analyze your individual needs and develop a plan to help you reach your goal.
